Marching Band Planning
When does planning for next year's marching band begin? Well, almost immediately after the season ends.
Staffing, instrumentation, budget, music, uniforms, procedures, scheduling, policies, grading, leadership tryouts, instrument purchases, drum major tryouts, guard tryouts, Disney planning. These are just some of the decisions that are made during an off season. The planning stage isn't really a stage at all but an ongoing process.
At this point in the process I have begun talking with students, parents, staff, and administrators about the plans for next season. I have some show ideas, have nearly finalized a guard tryout schedule, and have surveyed all students eligible to participate in next year's band.
Numbers aren't the true measure of success in a band program but they do tell part of the story. I am happy to say that at this early stage we will almost certainly be up in numbers for next year. I view this as the start of a long upward trend of growth in the program as I settle in as director and the students begin to get comfortable with my teaching.
If you know a student who is considering marching band for next season please encourage them to sign up. It is an exciting time in a young person's life during high school and they don't get a second chance to be in high school band.
Many things will be happening in the next few weeks and months to prepare for next season. One of the more exciting things will be more concrete details of the Disney trip planned for June 2015. There will also be rehearsal schedules, uniform fittings, guard tryouts, leadership auditions, drum major tryouts, and our first rehearsals of next year's music.
Let me know of any questions you may have about the upcoming events in the band department.
