Another marching season has come and gone. Sunburns, flip folders, fundies, uniform fittings, picture day, shoe sizing, candy bar sales, dry cleaning fees, color guard auditions, drum line sectionals, chaperone sign ups, bus requests, tired muscles, tears of frustration, hugs, smiles, new friendships, downpours of rain, cold, heat, wins, losses, and more. These are just some of the things that go on during a marching season. And let me tell you, after three months and hundreds of hours of practicing: It was all worth it!
Every time you didn't want to get up and come to practice but did anyway. Every broken reed and trip to the instrument repair shop. Every practice session and playing test. Every friendship strengthened. Every time that a staff member made a student go further and work harder than they thought they could; It was all worth it.
You see band isn't just about notes and rhythms. It isn't just about marching style and formations on the field. It is about excellence. It's about hard work and perseverance. It's about being part of a group and sacrificing part of yourself for the good of the "team".
You have probably heard some of the research that states that students in music do better academically. The most important things we teach can't be measured by a test and put on our school report card. These are things that will last far beyond high school. Our seniors are about to perform their last performance in high school marching band but the things that they have learned here will carry on far beyond tonight and affect everything they do.
I don't know about you but I can't wait until next yea!
