My daughter turns seven today(!!). For the time being what she wants more than anything is to spend time with her parents; and we want to spend time with her. However, I always have one eye on the future and that time when she would rather be doing something else, anywhere else, with anyone else than her mom and dad. One of her classmates from first grade says that she is his girlfriend and for now that is cute...kind of. But a time is coming when that will be anything but cute.
Many of you parents are in this time with your children. Depending on exactly how old they are they have reached or nearly reached the dreaded teenage years!!! (cue dramatic music) Hormones are crazy, they want to be treated like an adult (though they rarely act like one), boyfriends and girlfriends seemingly have more influence than you do. They want to hang out with friends but you're not always sure what exactly they are doing or which friends they are talking about.
Sound familiar?
So, what does that have to do with the band boosters? Well I'm glad you asked. Even though your kids are teenagers (or nearly) they still do love you greatly and long to feel your love in return. I believe one of the most effective ways to show our love is to give our most valuable resource...time. Saying I love you doesn't do much. They've heard that since before they could talk. But, giving up a Friday night to chaperone at a football game they are playing at speaks love. Taking the time to listen to them practice their instrument (painful as that might be) speaks love. Attending their band concert shows love.
What I'm saying is this; Your child has chosen to devote a great amount of time and energy into being a part of the band. How do we as parents support this? With money? Absolutely and unfortunately. Band is expensive (like most activities...ever try skiing?). But what about your time? Joining the booster organization is a very tangible way of saying "I care about what you care about and I want to support this".
We will be holding nominations and elections at our meeting on Monday, April 14 at 7pm in the high school band room. We will be changing in our leadership for the coming year and will be needing a person or persons to take on the treasurer's position.
Please consider supporting your child in this important group. As an officer or as a member at large.
And on behalf of your children who I know don't say it enough...thank you for all you do.
