Another year has all but gone. I have begun collecting instruments, cleaning out lockers, collecting forms, and finalizing grades. At our house we are discussing summer vacations, summer budgets, landscaping, home repairs, dance lessons, preschool, and a host of other things that I'm sure you discuss in your family.
By no means do I want to add to your busy schedule but I wanted to ask if you have considered upgrading your child's instrument or enrolling them in summer lessons. Many times when a child begins band in 5th grade the parents purchase or rent a "beginner" instrument to see if the child really likes band. The intention being that if Johnny or Jayne continue in band they will get a nicer instrument. This doesn't happen very often though. So just consider this: is the instrument your child plays holding them back? Sometimes even just an upgraded mouthpiece or reed can make a big difference in the sound and feel of an instrument for a fraction of the cost of an upgraded instrument.
Another thing to consider is private lessons. The amount of growth a child can make when taking private lessons is quite remarkable and if your child enjoys playing their instrument at all it makes sense to help them enjoy it even more. Lessons are available at the school over the summer and there are several area stores that provide music lessons. One is even offering a buy six, get six deal when a new instrument is rented.
I certainly don't want to add to your stress level but I just want to ask you to keep band and music in mind when planning out all of your summer plans.
See you at the Fourth of July Parade!!
